    DESCRIPTION

    Calcium + D3

Meeting daily calcium requirements is important to support bone density and strength. Calcium is well known for its role in building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. The body also needs calcium for muscles to move, for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part, to help blood vessels move blood throughout the body, and to help release hormones and enzymes that affect almost every function in the human body.

Calcium citrate is well absorbed on an empty stomach and does not constipate.

After weight loss surgery, the preferred form of calcium supplementation is calcium citrate as it is more effectively absorbed than other forms of calcium.

In addition, adequate supply of magnesium is vital to healthy bones and teeth. These two minerals also support muscle and nerve function.

Our Cal-Mag Citrate Complex includes vitamin D3 for supporting mineral absorbability. Vitamin D is known for its function in keeping bones strong but it also has a role in nerve, muscle, inflammation, and immune function. Every single cell of your body needs vitamin D! Vitamin D is now considered to be both a hormone and a vitamin. Not having enough vitamin D in our bodies is a health concern in the US population, especially among those who have excess weight. Recent studies have found that 60% to 80% of people with obesity have vitamin D insufficiency! If left unattended, it would only be a matter of time before vitamin D and calcium deficits result in osteopenia and osteoporosis (reduction of mass of the bones) or osteomalacia (extreme softening of the bones).

The ASMBS*, The Obesity Society and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists suggest supplementing with 1,500 to 2,000 of calcium citrate a day with at least 400 IU of vitamin D.

*AMSBS. American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

Other factors related to calcium absorption, are:

    • Caffeine increases calcium lost in the urine. If you drink coffee, limit its consumption to a maximum of two cups per day and avoid sodas and other caffeinated beverages
    • Taking calcium supplements with iron or zinc compromises the absorption of these minerals. Take these supplements two hours apart
    • Calcium decreases the absorption of certain drugs (bisphophonates, thyroid medication, some antibiotics)
    • Other drugs can increase calcium needs (corticosteroids, some diuretics)
    • Avoid phosphoric acid (found in sodas) and alcohol
    • Additional measures important in the pursuit of strong and healthy bones include weight-bearing exercise
